why woman was taken from the side of man

in my first year religion class reading in high school, i came upon a verse that had struck me in its beauty and truth. i thought it was nicely said, and although i have forgotten the exact words, i remembered enough to be able to find it over the internet again... i'm glad i found it and be able to share it with you...

*****

Eve was made by God not out of Adam's head to rule over him, nor out of his feet to be trampled upon by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, from under his arm to be protected by him and from near his heart to be loved by him." -- Matthew Henry

love letters of great men

love letters of great men inspired by the movie sex and the city

my sister and i were browsing at the bookstore tonight when we happened upon this book. it's a beautiful book of love letters written by great men of history, including those of pliny the younger, napoleon bonaparte, king henry viii, beethoven and others. but what really caught my attention (and the reason why i'm writing this) is the love letter of willian congreve to arabella hunt in 1690. if i were to be asked what's great about this book, i would say it would be this letter ---

*****

Dear Madam,

Not believe that I love you? You cannot pretend to be so incredulous. If you do not believe my tongue, consult my eyes, consult your own. You will find by yours that they have charms; by mine that I have a heart which feels them.

Recall to mind what happened last night. That at least was a love’s kiss. Its eagerness, its fierceness, its warmth, expressed the God its parent. But oh! its sweetness, and its melting softness expressed him more. With trembling in my limbs, and fevers in my soul I ravish’d it. Convulsions, pantings, murmurings shew’d the mighty disorder within me: the mighty disorder increased by it. For those dear lips shot through my heart, and thro’ my bleeding vitals, delicious poison, and an avoidless but yet a charming ruin.

What cannot a day produce? The night before I thought myself a happy man, in want of nothing, and in fairest expectation of fortune; approved of by men of wit, and applauded by others. Pleased, nay charmed with my friends, my then dearest friends, sensible of every delicate pleasure, and in their turn possessing all.

But Love, almighty Love, seems in a moment to have removed me to a prodigious distance from every object but you alone. In the midst of crowds I remain in solitude. Nothing but you can lay hold of my mind, and that can lay hold of nothing but you. I appear transported to some foreign desert with you (oh, that I were really thus transported!), where, abundantly supplied with everything, in thee, I might live out an age of uninterrupted ecstasy.

The scene of the world’s great stage seems suddenly and sadly chang’d. Unlovely objects are all around me, excepting thee; the charms of all the world appear to be translated to thee. Thus in this said but oh, too pleasing state! my soul can fix upon nothing but thee; thee it contemplates, admires, adores, nay depends on, trusts on you alone.

If you and hope forsake it, despair and endless attend it.

*****

how could i not resist reading this wonderful love letter and not fall in love? or in another love letter, be intrigued by bonaparte's hateful few words in his love letters for his wife? i guess i will have to buy the book if i want to find out what happened next...

stories

i had lunch today with the same people who made me so nervous yesterday, i actually thought my day was forever ruined. i went home feeling so down but my sister told me some really good things that made me change my attitude. she said, that of course, as an employee, i have to say yes to everything i was asked to do. second, there is a purpose in everything that happens and to trust that God will never want to harm us. from then on, i remembered something i read once that i should apply to my life now: to change something, change the way you see things.

today, when i arrived at the office, i was still feeling nervous but i forced myself to look at the brighter side, to think that everything has a purpose, and said a little prayer for guidance. from then on, everything went on smoothly. i might not have answered the many questions they posed on me but i'm glad that even for just a bit, i got our visitors interested in what i've presented. so too much for an introduction. suffice it to say, i'm happy everything turned out well today.

*****

at lunch today, we were joined by our spanish and english visitors. (one thing to grateful for is meeting the spanish guy because i was able to apply my 'hola, me llamo cielo.') lunch was late and i didn't get to talk much but it was fun. i loved the exchange of stories from the two guys and i find it very interesting to see how people live their lives, too. sometimes, it is fun to listen to relatively old people's stories. their lives are like part of history - not too great to have changed the world so much, but you can see how it affected their choices in life. let me share with you their stories.

englishman's stories

i don't smoke because when i was fourteen, i thought i'd try it. i got a pipe, bought a tobacco, lit it up, breathed in the smoke. then i breathed in again. i didn't realize that the pipe had varnish on it so i was also breathing it in. in a few minutes, i turned green and stayed in the hospital for days.

i've already visited your country before, in the mid-80's, just after the toppling down of the marcos dictatorship. i tell you, it wasn't the right time to visit the country. we went to manila, siquijor then cebu. i tell you, siquijor was one of the nicest place i've ever been to, with white sand beach. cebu wasn't much because there were plenty of people. yet it was also weird because we were the only ones in the resort. makes you think what's wrong with the resort now.

(spanish guy quips: like in a restaurant, when you're alone in there. makes you wonder if the food isn't good or what.)

spanish's stories

i hope we could find work here because i don't want to go back to somewhere like egypt. i don't want to bring along my ham everytime i go there.

in the old times, in the basque region of spain, there they built what was to be known as the country's loyalty. however, there came a time when the basque changed their minds about supporting it that they wanted to create their own spain. this started the guerilla, which is what you also find in your country. there was a time that they were popular with the people because during franco's dictatorship, they were the only ones who got the courage to shoot a policeman. everybody were crying 'bravo, bravo.' but now, the guerilla is almost no more. this is because nobody supports them anymore. i'd say, the only solution to this problem is that we have to educate this people. they are the ones who do not know anything but hold a pistol and shoot. give them a good job that pays well, a woman to marry and children to care for. you'll be surprised that there won't be any guerillas left.

i love wine that one day, while i was cooking with a friend, i brought out one of the best wine in the house, poured some for the ladies waiting for us in the living room, and hurried back to the kitchen with the wine. i said to my friend, this bottle, we will share!

colombia is one of the hardest place to work in. there was once a time when our company bought five energy generators in the country. two, we only can go by helicopters escorted by the army. the one, we can't really go to because of the guerillas. the country is beautiful but the work was dangerous.

my son, who studied engineering in france, was required to work in a factory. the school told them it would build character for them to see and experience labor conditions. his son went to vietnam to do his factory work, bought a motorcycle, and cruised his way through vietnam with it. he had a girlfriend there but when he got back to egypt, he had another girlfriend again. crazy.

new moon

new moon by stephenie meyer

if there was one reason why i'd be watching new moon, it would be because i would like to see the wolf. in the trailers, he actually seems good-looking and cool. last night, i got the chance to watch the movie with my sister and yes, jacob black is so hot and so cool! i say this, based only in the movie, because i have never read the books yet. i don't know how his character in the books really is. lea said he is not that cool because he was really obsessive about the female lead. well anyway, i do not wish to discuss his character as i only know little and it's only based in the movie. what i can say is that it showed that he loved bella and he'd do anything to protect her and keep her safe regardless of his own safety. who wouldn't wish for a guy like that, right?

as the movie progressed, i just can't help but laugh though, about most of the girls' reaction towards jacob's great body or edward's "good" looks. it was kind of weird to hear college girls cry out like that, like they were still in high school, or as if they're just going to die at that spot because of those two guys. as for me, okay, i really did appreciate jacob's overall physical attributes and i like his character there so if they'd ask me for a vote, he'd get mine hands down! hahaha! :) i hope i could see him in more movies soon.

just another thought, though. how come Black is the most favored name for a canine in the movies? think jacob black and sirius black.

friday night and peppermint mocha

*sigh*

i'm so happy. finally, i've been able to happen by starbucks with monina tonight for a cup of my favorite peppermint mocha. i don't fancy starbucks but when you're talking about their peppermint mocha, i'm there! :) unfortunately, the flavor is only offered during the Christmas season and that's a shame. it means that i only get to go at the coffee shop (almost) once a year. i don't think they even offered that last year! yet i guess it's better that way so people can have something new "old" to look forward to every end of the year.

i love minty drinks!

other drinks i always look forward to drinking are coffee beans' moroccan mint with chocolate and caffe molinari's menta. i guess i'm just in heaven whenever i have a drink of these. hmmm... yummy....

i can call this a night with a good movie to top it. district 9 here i come!

ice rink and friends

national history museum ice skating rink

"walking in a winter wonderland"

when a friend's fb status indicated that there's an ice skating rink at the national history museum at south kensington, i couldn't believe what i've read. i'm so naive that my first thought was how it was accommodated inside the dynamic building with all the dinosaur skeletons in it! and if it's really inside, it would be way too cool! then when i saw this picture, i realized it was located in the east lawn, where i once hanged out and had my photo taken with a dear friend who toured us around. i'll have to look for that picture and have it posted beside the picture above to see the difference during the spring. anyways, the place looks so magical that i'm wishing i could be there to be part of it! i do miss the time we were there and i hope i'd get a chance to see the place again -- and soon!

however, finding this picture was just one of the nicest thing that happened today. the most wonderful moment was spending my time with my friends bonding over dinner and a couple of drinks -- even though i accidentally broke a bottle on our way home! hehehe! guys, i enjoyed the night and hope we could do this more often! muah!

another love txt

isa pang txt na nakakailing. ito naman ngayon ay padala ni betch. aruy nga talaga yata ang pag-ibig....

"you always take my heart away
everytime my heart grows back
you manage to steal it again...
leaving me alive but hurting."

anong say mo?

so much to be grateful for

there's so much to be grateful for today, for the Lord has given me so much...

maybe the best one is that realizing that the Wisdom (of Solomon) was not missing in the new Bible I'm reading, but instead is the Song of Solomon. i just wonder why they had to change it!

the next few things that made me smile today are:

rgies buttescotch

i love butterscotch but the only time i get to taste the best of these is when someone from bacolod brings some home for me. now i don't have to harass from friends from bacolod to bring me some. i can buy it at the market-market grocery now! :)

bowling night at sm megamall

my teammates and i decided to join just so we could have fun. we even named our team "kulit" which means... what does kulit mean really? i guess there's no best english translation although one could say kulit can be described as someone who is naughty and persistent. anyways, it was supposed to be for fun really until our only guy, marjun, said that we have to play to win. is he competitive or what? we even decided to wear a uniform just for laughs! well, we did have fun but after playing each of our set, it looked like we were there to see if we can win or just place in the top 5. the first goal was to have a strike in the team, then have a ball go to the canal, score 100, then 200, then 300. well, how about 400?! monina just had to reach the 100 personal score. we were already competitive and each of us keeps egging the other person to score better and to compensate on the next throw. at the end of it all, we scored better than what we expected. after all, our last bowling game was a year ago and we didn't practice for this. our score was 472. we surpassed the team beside us whose players can score strikes, or the guys at the engineering who were more competitive than us. it was really good. our score wasn't that bad at all!

our score sheet at the bowling game

the kulit team

the most kulit among us was rhoda (middle) who just realized today that she already donated her fun run shirt during the typhoon ondoy relief operations

a lion among men. why was the lion a coward?

finally, i bought the third book in the "Wicked" series of Gregory Maguire. this will be my Christmas gift to myself, together with the BDJ journal. i'm still thinking if i'm wrapping it or not, though :D

so, many things to be grateful for, don't you think?

napailing

napailing na lang ako sa txt na ito sa akin ni lea:

when you are stuck loving someone
no matter how hard you try to forget that person
it's just not enough...
sometimes all we can do is stay away
and it does help a bit
but just for a while
coz when that person shows you even
the smallest gesture of affection,
all your efforts of moving on go down the drain...
and you're left alone again with nothing else to say but...
"damn, i just fell for that Again!"

oops, i did it again... (britney in the background)
di na natuto... (gary v in the background)

hahaha! di ka ba naman mapapailing nito? the other day, i was listening to launchcast's love song station and i just realized, love songs are so damn sad! haaay!

trip to divisoria

woke up early this morning for our trip to divisoria. goal for this trip was to buy anni's parent's wedding giveaways -- pearl/capiz inspired "jewelry" boxes. we were hoping to find those at tabora street where we can find a lot of things for many occasions, especially weddings.

this is a mini photo journal of our trip today:

ate making a sample of the giveaways:
heart-shaped capiz jewelry box in cherry red (and maroon)/matte gold with gold cord

lea had to have a fitting for her maid of honor dress at this shop at ylaya street (more near tabora, though). the wedding dresses were displayed there and i just had to take a picture of them. my excuse was i'm so ignorant about the presence of these shops here that i had to some pictures as proof! the dresses range from 2,500 to 3,800 Php.

i particularly like this wedding dress because i'm partial to halter-type dresses. bead work on the bodice is also very good.

after lunch and going around 168 Mall and Tutuban Mall, we decided to go back to the stall in front of Footmarks for the giveaways we ordered earlier. unfortunately, the items weren't ready yet so we had to wait and wait for a long time. my feet ached so much that later on, i just had to sit on the sidewalk. i might have looked like a "naluging intsik" and i felt so sleepy already. luckily for lea, a small chair was made available for her, perhaps a reward for being so patient by standing while waiting! anyway, in front of this stall is a christmas decor shop. if you notice, the wreaths above the stall are sold for 300Php. i didn't want to spend that much so i just "scrutinized" how they were made and the design and subtly canvassed the prices of the materials. at the stall beside it, they were selling a bare wreath for 40Php, the ribbon for Php30 and the 8pcs poinsettia set for Php80. at this stall, the bare wreath was sold for Php100, ribbon for Php50 and the flower, Php100 for 8 pcs.

these are the wedding souvenir items sold at the stall we ordered ours in. there are so plenty and all the decorations were done by them!

some of the flowers sold at the christmas decor stall

"little christmas tree, no one to buy you..." well, not so little after all. this area looked like a pine forest for sale! the christmas trees may range from 1,200 (about four feet) to 3,500 (6-ft).

the cherry red/matte gold with red cord heart-shaped capiz souvenir final product. one-piso coin for scale :)

my home-made wreath! cost is only Php150! :D there's no place yet to put it in so it's now hanging in front of my monet painting (bad!)

*****

Directions to Divisoria (the alternate route from Philcoa): Take a red or blue tricycle and get off at the old Glory's Grocery (soon to be opened as Save More) at V. Luna cor. Anonas Ext. Get on a Anonas or Proj 2 jeepney and get down at the St. Joseph Church. From there, walk to the Anonas LRT station. Take the westbound train going to Recto (the last station of LRT 2). From there, take a jeepney going to Divisoria. You will know when you're there if everyone's going down the jeepney already. You can easily see Tutuban Mall at right. Go straight Recto until you pass by Fiesta Shopping Mall, McDonalds (passing Ylanan Street) and then Chowking at Tabora Street. Mostly, you should look right (make sure that Tutuban is at your right and 168 at your left).

grateful day

despite the agitated moment with my officemate, everything went well today. Thanks be to God!

things to be grateful for:

1. i got up without feeling lazy even though the weather was good for sleeping in

2. got into an mrt without much of a hitch unlike yesterday

3. i was able to start my enrolment process (even though ate precy fought me over the filling-up of the form 5)

4. cats the musical reservation by allan, though we were not able to purchase it tonight because the ticketnet system went down by 7pm

5. hearty dinner with allan. because of my busy schedule today, that was the only time i was able to eat a full meal (note: breakfast - sandwich, lunch - apple, snacks - 2 yema balls)

but most of all, we are grateful because my sister is now a Master! :)

Congratulations, Wengks! We are proud of you. We love you!

51 days to Christmas!

little star at trinoma

"stars shining bright above you"

time flies so fast! 51 days and it's christmas!!! :) i didn't even notice that we've come past the 100 days to christmas. that's so sad but at least, i noticed the 50ish days. now i have started doing my christmas gift list and wish list. my wish list will soon to follow so watch out!
